Moor Mother has a very distinctive style that wouldn’t appeal to the masses. Her music is very abstract and dystopian, especially in the song ‘ALL THE MONEY’. Although her music can come across as peculiar, she does talk about the social and political issues within the world. In this song, she questions where the Western culture’s money has come from. For example, in the track she repeatedly whispers ‘Where do they get all the money?’, and this will be after she talks about ‘Big Ben’ or the ‘House of Commons’
What makes her music interesting is the fact that she talks about real-world issues but delivers them in such an interesting way. Her tracks contain a lot of syncopation. This is evident in her voice, the piano, and the drums. It’s a beautiful way of showing this because the topic she is talking about is so sensitive and all over the place that her music emulates that syncopation. Another method that Moor Mother uses in her music is the sonority. Her music sounds very dissonant as the sounds clash and lack harmony. This is effective because it enables the lyrics to flow well. I don’t enjoy hearing the drums and the melodic features. However, it draws me closer to her lyrics and I am more inclined to listen to what she is saying because of it.
Moor Mother also repeats her adlibs consistently. She does this because she wants to get what she is saying into the listener’s brains. When you take in what Moor Mother talks about it makes you question a lot. The use of delay on the adlibs and the main vocal also creates a creepy atmosphere when you listen to it. I believe that Moor Mother’s music can be helpful to people who want to be educated on the world’s issues instead of doing active research.
